At Atmosphere Academy, our middle and high school math programs are designed to provide rigorous, Common Core-aligned instruction that empowers students to engage with and master mathematical concepts. We believe in developing scholars who are not only proficient in solving mathematical problems but also possess a deep understanding of the underlying principles that drive those solutions.

Our program is structured around academic systems that foster critical thinking and real-world application. Students are encouraged to approach each problem not just as a task to be solved but as an opportunity to dissect and understand its individual components. Through a blend of traditional methods and technology, students learn to break down complex problems, analyze each part, and apply their knowledge to a variety of situations—both abstract and practical.

In our classrooms, scholars develop problem-solving skills that go beyond simple calculation. We focus on helping students connect abstract concepts to real-life applications, cultivating their ability to think critically and logically about mathematics. Whether it’s algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, or calculus, our program promotes deep mathematical comprehension that prepares students for success in high school, college, and their future careers.

The overall goal of our math curriculum is for students to not only be able to calculate with accuracy but to truly understand the math behind the operations. This ensures they are not only ready for academic challenges but equipped with skills that can be applied in everyday life and future problem-solving scenarios. At Atmosphere Academy, we prepare our students to be analytical thinkers and confident mathematicians in an ever-evolving world.

Atmosphere’s Middle School Math program aligns with the Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards. The aim of our Math Program is to equip students with the mathematical knowledge and skills necessary for a math-dependent world. In tandem with Atmosphere’s math systems, these standards allow educators to create innovative curriculum materials to support this goal. Our program emphasizes a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and practical application. Our program sets a high bar for achievement, ensuring students are well-prepared for both college and real life.

In class, students are presented with real-world problems they engage with independently and with their peers. Student thinking is utilized to develop strategies and pathways for solving complex problems. Math conjectures are established based on students’ work. Our program is data-driven and differentiated to support the learning needs of all students. It incorporates activities that prompt students to apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations, helping them connect classroom learning to practical applications.

In grade 6, instructional time is spent on five key areas:
(1) linking ratio and rate with whole number multiplication and division, and applying these concepts to solve problems;
(2) mastering the division of fractions and expanding the number system to include rational numbers, such as negative values;
(3) developing skills in writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations;
(4) enhancing understanding of area, surface area, and volume; and
(5) building foundational knowledge in simple probabilities and statistical reasoning.
In grade 7, students build upon foundations set in 6th grade to focus on three areas:
(1) furthering their understandings of proportional relationships to solve more complex problems;
(2) building on their understanding of rational numbers, expressions, and equations to solve more sophisticated expressions including multistep and inequalities, to prepare them for the manipulation of equations they will encounter in higher grades; and
(3) building on the foundations set in 6th grade to make  inferences about population samples.
In grade 8, with a new sophistication in thinking, students focus in on three areas:
(1)  they advance on their proportional reasoning to understand the concept of functions and use functions to describe quantitative relationships;
(2) they continue to build on their knowledge of expressions and equations to solve linear equations and systems of linear equations; and
(3) exploring transformations (translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations) and examining congruence and similarity through transformations. They begin working with the Pythagorean Theorem and use it to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Through our programing students enter high school equipped with a solid understanding of proportional reasoning, strong algebraic thinking, enhanced geometric understanding, and statistical literacy.

While students engage with the content, teachers move around to conference with those needing support.

Math-specific vocabulary is readily available to support students during class time.

During work time, math teachers provide individualized support to students.

Students engage in hands-on activities to deepen their learning experience

The high school math department offers a comprehensive curriculum to prepare students for graduation and college readiness. Core courses include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry, all taught at the Regents level to ensure the students meet state graduation requirements. These foundational courses emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success in mathematics.

To further enhance student preparedness for higher education, the department offers advanced courses such as Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus, which provide a rigorous exploration of mathematical concepts and college-level material. Financial Literacy / Consumer Math is also integrated into the curriculum, equipping students with practical skills for real-world financial decision-making. This diverse course offering ensures that all students have the opportunity to develop a strong mathematical foundation and the necessary skills for future academic pursuits.

Our mathematics Achievement regents preparation program is designed to challenge and inspire students through a rigorous curriculum emphasizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our dedicated instructors provide personalized support, ensuring every student is equipped with the tools and confidence to excel in their mathematical journey.  Through this Achievement program, we foster a love for mathematics and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals.

Scholars in Geometry Regents Level mathematics class at Atmosphere Academy collaborate to solve real-world problems, applying critical thinking and mathematical concepts to tackle complex scenarios.

Scholars are engaged in project-based learning, using geometric knowledge and academic vocabulary to design and create geometric cities, applying mathematical concepts to real-world challenges.

Student Learning Specialist and Math teachers collaborate to create resource walls, providing scholars with visual references for key terms and formulas to reinforce and support the content being taught,

9th Grade Algebra 1 teacher Ms. Rivera works one on one with a scholar to deepen his understanding of the mathematics taught to ensure his academic success and improve his level of proficiency.
